Letters From The Library

Dear Friends,

Hello again! It is November, and the leaves are quickly falling from the trees. And how about those acorns? Have you ever seen so many of them or such large ones? Scientists call it a “mast year” for oak trees, but have no definitive reason as to what causes it. Maybe you could find out at the library.

Medford Library Association provides a special service to the patrons of Pinelands Library. It is called Browse Books. We purchase extra copies of popular books in high demand. These books are tagged separately and are not part of the countywide system. If you are on a long waiting list for a new release, stop into the Pinelands to see if the book is on our browse shelf. If it is, you can check it out that day rather than wait.

Another one of our special services is Paws to Read, a program designed to help children with their reading skills. The paws belong to registered therapy dogs Brooke, a six-year-old Standard Poodle, and Ocho, a four-year-old German Shepard. Children can register to read to their furry friends for 15 minutes, and both dogs love a good story. This special time helps children of all ages improve both their literacy skills and their confidence.

On a personal note, I took my granddaughter to the library last week. She is two, and it was her first trip. Now what, you may ask, could a two-year-old do at the library? Lots! There is so much more than just books. There were toys, puzzles, age appropriate computers and an amazing aquarium maintained by Dave Parson, a teacher in our local school district. It was the first Wednesday of the month, so there was even a make and take craft. Even the little ones have fun at the library, although she was wondering why she could not eat the counted candy corn in a jar for this month’s raffle. Just guess the number.

Be sure to remember the adult raffle this month. The prize includes books, a beautiful framed photo of Main Street Medford and a gift certificate to Braddock’s. The photo is on display in the lobby of the restaurant.

To all those who participated in the fundraiser at the Pop Shop, a hearty thank you. Many of our continuing programs will be funded by your support and generosity. Others to be thanked are the Hovers of Main Street Family Dentistry for sponsoring our summer weekly raffles for youth and teens.

Until next time, keep raking those leaves and turning those pages. Happy Thanksgiving!
