Here comes the chill in the air. Can you feel it? As the weather cools down our kitchen is heating up! The Recreation Commercial Kitchen has its doors wide open and fall means the first classes offered for children in grades four to six. Introduction to Baking under the direction of Kristen Simms will take place on Wednesdays starting Oct. 7.
After nearly a year in development, renovation and production, the Recreation Commercial Kitchen is ready for classes. Beginning with classes for our youngest chefs in training, the kitchen will soon have local mouths watering with the culinary creations of our youngest students. As the first class offered through the Recreation Commercial Kitchen, Introduction to Baking will cover the fundamentals of baking including measurements, ratios and proportions. Under the direction of Kristen Simms, participants will be given hands-on instructions for making favorites such as cookies, cupcakes and muffins. Simms has been lifelong baker and is excited about preparing the next generation of cooks. The tasty treats that are fashioned in this class will be ready to take home at the end of the class.
Introduction to Baking is the first of what promises to be a long series of classes offered to children, adults, couples and parent-child teams. As the development of the series continues, classes will be diverse. From four week classes to one day workshops, classes will encompass baking, easy snacks and no-fuss meals for kids, holiday baking and special event menus. As the kitchen programs grow, residents will be given opportunities to learn new skills and hone old ones.
Having children in the kitchen is so important in today’s busy age. In an era of eating on the run, too often we reach for fast foods instead of good foods. Teaching children good techniques and proper eating habits prepares them for a healthy lifestyle that will follow them for life. The baking class will focus on the sweeter tastes of life but follow-on classes will focus on good nutrition and healthy lifestyle eating.
In addition to weekly classes, one-day workshops will be offered with specialized interests. Workshops will include Holiday Menus, Dinners for Two, Meals in Minutes and other specialized offerings. Workshops will change seasonally and will focus on local and seasonal foods. Continue checking the township website for new classes being offered!
