Medford Friends Multi faceted program: Lenape, Early Settlers, and Quakers in the Rancocas Valley

Medford Friends (Quaker) Meeting will present a special program “Quakers on the Land” at the Meetinghouse, 14 Union St. Medford at 11:30 a.m., following Meeting for Worship at 10 a.m. on Oct. 11. All are welcome.

The program will be presented in three segments: “The Lenape Indians of the Rancocas Valley” by archeologist John Lawrence; “Some Early Settlement along the Rancocas Creek” by noted historian Paul Schopp of Riverton; and “West Jersey, a Quaker Enterprise,” by author and journalist Carol Suplee of Lumberton.

Originally trained as a prehistoric archaeologist focusing on early Native American cultures, Lawrence now focuses his research on historic archaeology. He will discuss how anthropologists and archaeologists have attempted to reconstruct the past life ways of the Lenape, using the Rancocas Valley as an example.

Schopp, a life-long historian specializing in Cultural Resource Management, is the associate director of the South Jersey Culture & History Center at Stockton University. He will discuss the earliest Western history of the state we now call New Jersey and document the different settlers along the Rancocas Creek.

Carol Suplee, a journalist in Burlington County for more than four decades, is the author of the book “Stories of Willingboro Township” and other writings.

The program, sponsored by the Adult Education Committee, will be preceded by a brief light lunch. So that all visitors may be accommodated, please RSVP in advance by email at [email protected] , call 609–953–8914 or visit www.medfordfriendsmeeting.org for more information.

Medford Friends Meeting has been an active Quaker faith community since 1759. First Day School (Sunday School) is conducted concurrently with 10 a.m. Meeting for Worship on First Day (Sunday). All are welcome.
