Summer is always a catch 22 — there is never enough time to do everything we want to do, and too much idle time. Parents constantly find their children either being over- or under-scheduled. The Department of Parks and Recreation is pleased to offer a wide variety of activities to help fill those summer gaps without over-complicating summer schedules.
As summer has reached its mid-point, there are still a variety of activities to participate in. Just because we are knocking on August’s door doesn’t mean there is nothing to do. This August, the Boys and Girls Sports Camp gives children ages 5 to 12 the opportunity to learn and fine-tune fundamental soccer, baseball, softball, street hockey, tennis, basketball and flag football skills. Participants will learn proper dietary habits, stretching/warm-up routines, practice techniques and drills developed to improve their skills. Small group instruction will give children the opportunity to work with mentors and participate in live games.
The dates of the program are: Session 1: Boys and girls, ages 5 to 7, Aug. 17 through August 21 and Session 2: Boys and Girls, ages 8 to 12; Aug. 24 through Aug. 28. Both sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon at Jeff Young Park. Inclement weather location is the Upper Elementary School. Under the instruction of Terry O’Brien and teen mentors, participants will learn a wide variety of skills. Coach O’Brien has been coaching and instructing youth sports for more than 20 years, including 13 years at the William Allen Middle School.
The Department of Parks and Recreation always has something going. The Summer Concert Series continues with live concerts on the lawn of the Moorestown Community House on Aug. 3 and 10 beginning with youth presentations at 6:30 p.m. Bring a blanket, your family and non-perishable food items to benefit Live Civilly and to help our local food pantries. This year’s concert series has brought out record numbers of people and have been a tremendous community event.
And, as we enter the last few weeks of summer, it’s never too soon to think about fall registrations. Fall registrations are all online at www.moorestown.nj.us, Community tab, Parks & Facilities link. From art, ceramics, dance and pre-K sports programs to youth soccer and youth field hockey to yoga, badminton, pickleball and adult sports leagues, there is truly something for everyone. Join the Recreation Nation and enjoy the multitude of opportunities available to the Moorestown community.
