National Night Out is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the Evesham Police Department, Neighborhood Watch and the local Target Store. The event is taking place at the Evesham Township Municipal Building parking lot (984 Tuckerton Road) on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2015 from 6 p.m.–9 p.m.
The department invites the public to be a part of this event, which will include the Police Department and Evesham Fire Department showcasing their specialty details, including tours of emergency vehicles and tours of the Evesham Police Station. Other participating agencies include the Evesham Fire Department, Burlington County Sheriffs Department, local businesses, civic groups and neighborhood organizations. Crime Prevention Materials and information will be on display, and distributed by Neighborhood Watch and Police Crime Preventions.
National Night Out, America’s Night Out Against Crime,” was introduced by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) Association in 1984. The program was the brainchild of NATW Executive Director Matt A. Peskin. That first year, 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out (NNO). Nationwide, 2.5 million Americans took part in 1984. Participants turned on their front porch lights to show their solidarity with local law enforcement. The citizens were sending a message that they would not tolerate crime in their neighborhood.
While the traditional ‘lights on’ and front porch vigils remain a part of NNO, activities have expanded considerably over the years to include block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies and meetings.
The department’s new “Flash Drive Safety Band” program will be conducted during the event. The bands will be distributed to parents in attendance. These bands hold their children’s personal information that they entered electronically during the event. Digital photographs, a sample audio of the child speaking, and a video of the child walking will also be included on the flash drive. This information would become critical to police if the child were ever to go missing. The parent can wear the band while on family vacation and immediately offer the flash drive to the police agency handling the emergency.
Previously, the agency utilized paper copies for this purpose and discovered that the flash drives solve a major portability issue.
