On the last day of school, as part of a “Think Globally/Act Locally” movement, Kirby’s Mill students cleaned out their desks and book bags and collected 18 pounds of pencils, pens, highlighters, crayons, pens, index cards, sticky notes, etc. Instead of their used school supplies being thrown away, the students donated these items to an organization called Afya which sends humanitarian and medical supplies to 53 countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
In America we take for granted that these small necessities are in every room, junk drawer and car but in other countries something as insignificant as a pen is treasured and in high demand. So instead of our school supplies being trash, Kirby’s Mill school feels proud that we have contributed to help others.
