The Mt. Laurel Township Municipal Utilities Authority completed replacement of 1,800 feet of six-inch water main on Amsterdam Road in April of this year. MUA Executive Director, Pamela Carolan explained, “Due to the unusually high number of leaks on this street, we targeted the 43-year-old water main for replacement by 2020.”

Last year Mt. Laurel Township released its 2014 Local Road Program paving schedule and Amsterdam was included on the list. “It only made sense to coordinate our water main replacement with Mt. Laurel Township’s roadway paving”, MUA Chairman Chris Smith said.

Design was accelerated to begin the water main replacement in early spring of 2015. Once the main was installed a special backfill was utilized, not only because it was a better product to prevent long term trench settlement, but to also speed up restoration prior to the township’s planned paving. The cost to the MUA for the new water main, a new fire hydrant and new service connection for 35 homes was $375,000.
