A Mt. Laurel man was indicted for homicide by a Burlington County Grand Jury for causing the death of his mother in last year.
On June 11, the Grand Jury today returned an indictment of aggravated manslaughter against a 46-year-old Mt. Laurel man. Arraignment will be scheduled soon in Superior Court. He remains lodged in the Burlington County Jail on $250,000 bail.
The man was charged with simple assault on Oct. 4, 2014 after police were called to the home that he shared with his 66-year-old mother. According to the investigation, the mother said her son had thrown her to the ground and choked her with his hands following an argument.
She refused medical treatment at that time, but went to a hospital the next day for head pain and underwent surgery for a brain hemorrhage.
Following surgery, she entered into a coma, was placed on a ventilator and listed in critical condition. Because of his mother’s worsened condition, the charge against the man was upgraded to aggravated assault on Oct. 7, 2014. The mother was subsequently removed from the ventilator and a tracheotomy was performed to assist her with breathing. She died Nov. 13, 2014 from a tracheal hemorrhage. An autopsy performed by Burlington County Medical Examiner Ian Hood determined that her death was due to the original injury sustained during the assault and ruled the death a homicide.
The investigation was conducted by detectives from the Mt. Laurel Police Department and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.
