The Department of Parks & Rec Column

In addition to the time honored Summer Parks and Summer Theater Programs offered by the Department of Parks & Recreation, there are a variety of camps available to the youth sports enthusiasts. From a comprehensive sports camp to evening basketball, soccer and lacrosse there are specialized sports camps for youth of allĀ ages!

New this summer is the Girls Lacrosse Clinic for grades first through eighth, in fall of 2015. The Lacrosse program will run from June 22ā€“25 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the Wesley Bishop turf field. The Lacrosse clinic is taught by long-time lacrosse coach and official, Debbie Flick. The focus of this program is to offer each individual player an opportunity to develop and improve her skills in the heat of the game. Rather than focusing on static drills Flick will encourage players to work on skills through game play. Such skills as stick skills, shooting and offensive and defensive tactics will be covered. This is the perfect clinic for young girls looking to improve the fundamentals of theĀ game.

The Boys and Girls Soccer Clinic is a favorite of Moorestown youth. Under the direction of coach Rich McConnell the emphasis of this program is to develop solid soccer players in a fun and educational environment. By teaching foundational skills, sportsmanship and general soccer knowledge young soccer players develop strong fundamentals, which allow them to grow and develop. This program will run from June 22ā€“25 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., also on the Wesley Bishop TurfĀ fields.

For the all-around athlete, the Boys and Girls Sports Camp is the perfect option! Youth will be divided into age groups, ages 5ā€“7 and 8ā€“12, so that age appropriate developmental skills can be addressed. This camp will be offered Aug. 17ā€“21 and Aug. 24ā€“28 at Jeff Young Fields. Located at the beautiful Jeff Young Park youth will learn and fine-tune fundamental soccer, baseball, softball, street hockey, tennis, basketball and flag football skills. Participants will learn proper dietary habits, stretching/warm-up routines, practice techniques and drills developed to improve their skills. Coached by coach Terry Oā€™Brien, small group instruction will give children the opportunity to work with mentors and participate in liveĀ games.

And finally, the Instructional Basketball Clinic will be offered again on Thursday evenings from June 18-Aug. 6. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. age specific groups will learn under the direction of coach Stuart and his outstanding staff. Players will learn proper dietary habits, stretching/warm up routines and practice drills to develop their skills. Youth will be given an opportunity to showcase their skills during live-game action. Coach Stuart will provide every player the opportunity learn and fine-tune his or her fundamental basketball skills. Matt Stuart was inducted into the Caldwell College Hall of Fame, played professionally for five years, and has been coaching/instructing multiple levels of basketball for the past twenty years. Terry Oā€™Brien has been coaching and teaching for more than 20Ā years.
