The students in the Kenneth Olson Middle School spent the afternoon of Friday the 13th, enthusiastically celebrating both the learning of math and those familiar digits which make up part of the circumference of a circle: Pi.
The students began with a “math rap” which they spent the previous week writing and rehearsing. The students performed their math themed raps for the student body who clapped along happily.
Next, the room grew silent as students participated in a Pi memorization contest, won by John Meale, an 8th grader who memorized over 80 digits!
Fun soon followed with a pie-eating relay where students and teachers participated as teams to see which team could devour the mini coconut custard pies. The final part of the day was spent with students pi-ing his or her favorite teacher and teachers reciprocating with the gooey treats.
The staff, administration, teachers, and students enjoyed themselves while supporting student scholarships in math, and fostering an interest in an important subject. The staff would like to thank Murphy’s Market of Tabernacle for kind donations and the school cafeteria for good baking.
