The Department of Parks and Rec Column and Schedule

Lucky for Moorestown, Recreation Basketball is still in full swing.

This year, with a record number of youth participating in this beloved recreation program, never have there been more “first-timers.”

This year marks a tremendous increase in the number of first-time players in all leagues. In an effort to keep that momentum going and to encourage participation in the Recreation Nation, the Department of Parks & Recreation will be partnering again with local non-profit, Live Civilly to offer the March Madness Tournament of Giving.

The Tournament of Giving will be Saturday, March 14 at the Church Street Recreation Center and is open to all youth and adults grades three and up. Tournament play will be age appropriate and divided by gender. The classification of play will be divided between boys and girls and will fall into the following categories: Junior Ballers (grades three to six); Middle School (grades seven and eight); High School (grades nine to 12) and Adult Division (ages 19 and up). Junior Ballers and Middle School teams will play from 9 a.m. until noon. At noon, the 3-Point Shooting Contest will occur and is open to all ages. High School and Adult Games will occur between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The fee for the tournament is $20 per person or $80 per team with a maximum of four players to a team. Youth with documented Homework Help hours, students attending Homework Help seeking assistance, will be given the opportunity to participate in exchange for four hours of Homework Help between Feb. 16 and March 13. Information about Homework Help can be found at www.livecivilly.org.

The Tournament of Giving is a partnership tournament between The Department of Parks & Recreation and Live Civilly. All proceeds from the tournament go toward the numerous outreach efforts that the department and Live Civilly partner on. These initiatives range from nutritional and educational outreach through the Open Gym program and Live Civilly Homework Help to the summer outreach efforts that provide nutritious lunches to local youth.
