Update: Medford resident charged in armed robbery

A Medford man is in New Jersey State Police Custody after he was charged with conducting an armed robbery at Medford News Shop on the morning of Jan. 8 and later led police on a chase through multiple South Jersey towns.

A 32-year-old male resident of Pine Boulevard in Medford was charged with first-degree robbery, third degree aggravated assault, third degree theft and fourth degree possession of a weapon after police detectives determined the man committed the robbery at Medford News Shop around 9 a.m.

According to police, a man reportedly entered the shop wearing a brown winter coat, black pants and wearing a dark cover over the lower portion of his face. The suspect showed the cashier a handgun and ordered them to empty the cash register. The suspect fled the scene in a Ford Ranger pickup truck with an undisclosed amount of money.

Later that morning, Camden County Metro Police in Camden City observed the vehicle. The suspect fled when officers attempted to stop the vehicle. He led police on a pursuit through a number of South Jersey towns. Police eventually apprehended the suspect on a dirt road in the Wharton State Forest. An imitation firearm and some of the stolen money were recovered from the vehicle.

The suspect is in state police custody pending additional charges related to the pursuit and his apprehension.
