Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard has been informed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) that they plan to close all travel lanes on Route 42 northbound in Bellmawr on Dec. 29 and 30. Closures will be segmented and start at 8 p.m. with a single lane, then two lanes at 10 p.m. and all lanes closed by 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
“This is a significant closing of the most heavily traveled thoroughfare in Camden County,” said Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works. “Motorists need to be aware of these changes because they will affect traffic in the region.”
The contractor for the Direct Connect project, PKF Mark III, will close all lanes on Route 42 northbound near the Creek Road overpass for wood sheeting placement under recently placed bridge beams.
“The traffic delays caused by the merging of these roadways are a daily nightmare for motorists each rush hour,” Leonard said. “The state is undertaking a monumental change to this highway interchange by creating a substantial upgrade to the current configuration. It also has a significant impact on Camden County motorists and several municipalities.”
The precise timing of both projects is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
Detour plan:
All traffic will be detoured onto the Exit 1B ramp to I-295 northbound and then to Exit 27, which is a left exit, to get back onto Route 42 northbound/I-76 westbound.
