Ed Winkler is honored for his many years of service with the Moorestown Lions Club

A very dedicated man of Moorestown was honored and recognized with a plaque last week for his service to the town. However, he wasn’t a man who needed recognition. He did all of his helping and volunteering to help others.

At its meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 10, the Moorestown Lions Club honored the late Edward Winkler for his dedication to the club as well as Moorestown. There to accept his plaque were his children Wayne and Denise Winkler.

“Dad was very low key. He didn’t want recognition for anything. This is just how he was. That was his personality,” said Denise, who is also a Moorestown resident. “He did things from his heart. He did it because he wanted to.”

Ed was a Lion for more than 66 years, joining in April 1948 when the Moorestown Lions Club was founded. He helped establish the club in Moorestown and played a large part in making the club what it is today. He was the last surviving charter member.

In the past, he was the treasurer, secretary and president of the club. He was also a life member of Lions Clubs International since May 1, 1979, and a Melvin Jones Fellow since Sept. 22, 1993.

“This club was his life. It really was. He was really dedicated to it,” Wayne said.

A lifelong resident of Moorestown, living on the same street for all his 89 years, he was involved with many organizations and projects in town, including being elected to Moorestown Council in 1949 and serving for one term.

He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. After his time in the military, he worked for the Moorestown school system and then went into property management of real estate and worked for Island House in Margate for many years.

Before his passing in June, you could see Ed at every Moorestown Lions Club event, members said. He could be found at the golf outing, holiday parade, beef and beer and casino nights, just to name a few, as well as every club meeting.

“Any and all projects, he was involved in. He was extremely active,” Wayne said.

“He did not miss a meeting. He was a great old man,” Joseph Perla, a member of the Moorestown Lions Club for 45 years, said. “He was always trying to get people involved.”

Winkler’s family was really touched and happy that their father was honored by the Moorestown Lions Club by receiving a plaque and recognition for his work. Members who knew Ed agreed.

“He deserved it. Anytime it was for the Lions, he was there,” Perla said.

The Moorestown Lions Club has been serving the community since 1948. It has 39 members who volunteer their time to perform a variety of community service activities.

“We are proud of our club’s 65 years of service to the community. The Lions Club members thank everyone who contributes to this important work. You are truly helping Lions make a difference in our community,” said Moorestown Lions Club president Helen Davies-Miramontes.
