Medford Township leaf collection begins on Nov. 10

Medford Township officials have announced the fall 2014 Leaf Collection Program will begin the week of Nov. 10, and continue until the entire township has been collected. The neighborhood services staff will commence leaf pickup on Nov. 10 in zone three, then continue onto zones four, five, one and concluding in zone two.

The township administration reminds residents of the requirements for leaf collection as included in the Medford Solid Waste Ordinance and the NJ State Stormwater Management Regulations. Major provisions in Ordinance 82–4 are as follows:

1. Leaves can be placed curbside now. Any leaves placed curbside after the township has picked-up in a zone will be the sole responsibility of the homeowner to remove. For those residents scheduled for a later pick-up, township officials remind you that leaves left out too soon could create a fire hazard.

2. Leaves must not be placed within 10 feet from any storm sewer. Do not park vehicles on the street close to leaf piles, our trucks will not risk damage to any parked vehicle, which makes accessibility difficult for our equipment.

3. Leaves must be piled away from the curb or edge of the property to allow for water runoff during storms, but not be placed any further than six feet from the edge of the roadway. At no time should leafs be placed in the roadway. This will help alleviate traffic, pedestrian and bike hazards.

4. Any leaves generated by professional landscapers, contractors or anyone hired by a homeowner must be removed by same.

In the past, the township has encountered delays with leaf collection due to non-compliance with township requirements, which impacts the department’s ability to deliver prompt and efficient service. Residents that do not follow the above procedures will not have their leaves picked up. The full provisions of Ordinance 82-D can be found on the Medford website utilizing the “Council and Administration link” to administrative codes.

Progress updates will be posted on the homepage of the Medford website, and sent out via the email notification system also on the township website. Residents are strongly encouraged to register for these e-mails for these and other township operations at www.medfordtownship.com/emails.

Residents unsure of which zone they are located in should check the township website, for the designated streets and subdivisions in each zone.

The Medford Township Garage, Yard and Dump will accept leaves daily from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Residents must provide proof of residency to gain access to the drop-off point. No contractors will be permitted to drop off any items. Residents arriving at the drop-off area in a commercial vehicle will be asked to sign a form stating that all materials are from their personal residence and not commercially generated items.

Residents may also contact the Neighborhood Services Department at (609) 654–6791 for additional information.
