The South Jersey Pops, led by conductor and music director Robert Schiavinato, opens its 2014–2015 concert season on Sunday, Dec. 14, with a musical celebration of Christmas and Hannukah at Lenape High School.
“Ours will be a concert for the whole family,” Schiavinato said. “We’ll have traditional carols, the pop tunes that many of us have grown up with, music from television’s classic ‘Charlie Brown Christmas’ and selections from the hit Disney musical ‘Frozen.’ For rock fans of all ages, the Pops’ strings will be featured playing Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s ‘Wizards in Winter.’”
The Pops will also play Leroy Anderson’s “Christmas Festival” and “Sleigh Ride,” both popularized by the Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler and now fixtures in the Christmas repertoire. They will also perform the enduringly popular holiday standards, “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” and “White Christmas;” and a lively medley of Hannukah songs.
The concert begins at 3 p.m. The doors at Lenape open at 2:30 p.m. Tickets for adults are $8. All preschoolers and children in grades kindergarten through eight are admitted free. Tickets and money-saving season subscriptions are available at www.southjerseypops.org. Tickets are also available at the door.
“We encourage parents and grandparents to bring children to our concerts,” Christian Stebbins, president of the Pops’ Board of Trustees, said. “One of our goals is to bring live music to young people in the hope that they will develop a love for music that will last a lifetime and inspire in as many of them as possible a desire to make music themselves.”
