Settled across from Lenape High School and between the sports fields of Hartford Crossing Sports Complex is 120 acres of township-owned natural terrain offering outstanding trail riding for bicycles, nature walking, and hikers.
A joint community effort comprised of citizens, local businesses and government and local organizations has set forth to develop “Hartford Crossing Trails” as a place where the public can ride bikes, hike or simply enjoy the natural setting. For well over a year, the Harford Trails group has been working with Medford Township and the state to carve out more than five miles of natural trails for recreational public use. The group has also been working with the township and Guzzi Engineering of Medford to submit plans and drawings for state approval. Matthew Keane, a long time resident and chair of the Environmental Affairs Advisory Committee, has been spearheading the trail layout.
On Sunday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hartford Trails is asking volunteers from all walks of life to join them for their first “trail making event.” Their goal will be to clear away downed branches and trees as well as to clear pathways and remove some of the trash that has accumulated over the past year. Bring your friends and family, as well as rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, leaf blowers, bow saws and pole saws, and the will to work and help them create a great natural place to bike and hike in Medford. Work gloves and long pants are a must.
With the cold air rolling in, the leaves have fallen which allows for better visibility. As a bonus, the recent cold snap has also reduced the tick and chigger populations. Hartford Trails is hoping to get the first stage of the trail cleaning done before the snow sets in. They invite any Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church groups, landscapers, civic groups and the business community to bring a welcome helping hand. Anyone can join this effort.
