Letter: Medford senior encourages others to support tax reimbursement

Attention all seniors 65 years and older in New Jersey. Senate Bill 213 currently written calls for seniors to receive a 50 percent reimbursement of their property taxes.

A large number of seniors leave New Jersey every year because of disproportionally high property taxes, no. 1 or no. 2 in the USA.

If we sell our home and leave New Jersey, it would undoubtedly be sold to a couple with two to three children, which results in a loss of $20,000 to $36,000 per year to the school budget.

We are seniors, all our children and grandchildren live in New Jersey. Since our last child left high school, 30 years ago, we have paid about $300,000 in just school taxes. Our fair share? In our opinion, much more than fair, 30 years of contributing without receiving any benefit. Why are school taxes continued until death or leaving the state? The currently scant and insufficient programs, intended to solve senior tax problems, will not influence any senior’s decision to remain in New Jersey.

Get behind Senate Bill 213, a win-win piece of legislations, by contacting your state senator ASAP and keep families together.
