Thomas Stone Heritage Academy announced that Nathaniel Emery was named semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Per the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, “about 1.4 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 national merit scholarship program by taking the 2013 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semi-finalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.”
Emery was one of approximately 16,000 students notified that he has qualified as a semifinalist. He will now compete to advance to finalist standing in the competition. This is Thomas Stone Heritage Academy’s second student in as many years earning this distinction.
A senior from Shamong, Nathan also received the College Board AP Scholar with Honor award based on outstanding performance on the 2013 and 2014 Advanced Placement Exams.
One of Nathan’s interests outside of school is Model UN, having attended conferences hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University and Georgetown University. On Sept. 20, he will lead his club, the American Homeschool Model UN Club, in its second annual Model UN conference through which he hopes to continue to grow an interest in the homeschooling community about global issues and how nations can work together to create solutions.
Emery also spends his volunteer time working with special needs children, fundraising for UNICEF, helping other students as a teaching assistant in AP Calculus BC, AP US History and AP English Language and co-leading gluten-free food drives and raising awareness about the need for gluten-free products in food banks. He hopes to study international relations, mathematics, Russian and Japanese in college.
