Dog rescued off streets of Camden looking for permanent home

Using the Internet to find a place to live isn’t all that difficult these days, but doing so while also being a dog is a bit more of a challenge.

That’s the story of Sweet Suri, the nearly 1-year-old pitbull mix who is trying to find a permanent home, or as her Facebook page puts it, a “Forever Family.”

The page, Sweet Suri Looking for her Forever Family, was started in March by Suri’s foster mom and Marlton resident Amy Anderson.

It showcases Suri’s day-to-day antics and journey as she recovers from first being found on the streets of Camden, to being placed in an animal shelter, to dealing with Demodex Mange, to being saved again by the One Love Animal Rescue of Mt. Laurel and placed in her current foster home.

Both Anderson and Suri’s Facebook page describe little Suri as having come a very long way in a short amount of time.

“I don’t even know how to describe what she looked like when she came to me,” Anderson said. “She had barely any fur, and she was pink and bloody. Every time you touched her, she would bleed — that’s how bad the mange was.”

Once Suri was on her way to recovery, Anderson said her personality started to shine through, which became the main focus of the page.

“At first, it started as a way to show her progress coming along with her skin problem and it sort of turned into her and her little personality,” Anderson said. “She just started doing things and it turned into her little comedy routine.”

Now the page has a constant stream of photos featuring Suri making faces, modeling outfits, rolling around the house and going on trips around town.

“She’s quite popular,” Anderson said. “She has over 4,000 followers. She’s quite the little entertainer. If you looked at her pictures…you wouldn’t even believe she was the same dog. It’s amazing.”

Suri’s time with Anderson has exemplified the goal of the One Love Animal Rescue, which takes animals from shelters and places them in foster homes to allow them to adjust to living with others and develop a personality.

When someone does finally wish to adopt a pet, the person has a better idea of what the animal is like.

Anderson said Suri currently weighs about 55 pounds and isn’t expected to get much bigger, is crate trained, housebroken and would be a great fit in a home with other dogs.

“Definitely a home with other dogs,” Anderson said. “She loves other dogs. We’re unsure of small animals and casts as of right now. We’re not sure if she would get along with them or if she would think of them as toys. Children would also be good. She gets along great with kids.”

Suri is currently on medication for her mange, which will eventually go away, so Anderson said for a short time longer, Suri would probably be better off in her foster home, but after that she will be ready for her forever family.

“I describe her as sassy,” Anderson said. “She’s sort of a big personality in a little body. She’s just this huge personality in there. She’s just silly. I’ve never met a sillier dog in my life. She’s just social.”
