Tabernacle Township Committee authorizes new position

At its monthly meeting held May 27, the Tabernacle Township Committee authorized the creation of a new position within the township to help augment the summer workload.

According to township administrator Doug Cramer, the necessity of a temporary part-time office clerk is due to the township’s administrative employees taking personal leave this summer.

The part-time clerk will handle the daily operations of the office including the handling of incoming telephone calls and incoming and outgoing mail delivery. The role will provide assistance for the township clerk, deputy clerk and tax collector as needs arise.

Cramer said the position will not become full time or a permanent position and that the salary is fixed and determined by township ordinance.

• Both rescue squad chief George Jackson and fire department chief Dave Smith made comments in regard to the committee’s decision to begin the process of dissolving the fire district.

“I’m looking forward to working with the township. It’s time to move on,” Smith said. “I’d like the residents to know we will continue to fight fire. This is what we do. No matter what, this is what we have to do.”

Mayor Joseph Barton was appreciative of Smith’s attitude.

“Chief Smith, I applaud your comments and your spirit that you bring to the table to work for the betterment of the residents,” he said. Jackson echoed Smith’s sentiment. “I have two goals for my department. The first goal is to move forward and get back to what our main focus is, which is providing the best service to our residents. My second goal is to work with the fire company and get back to where we used to be in a cooperative effort. I look forward to working with committee,” Jackson said.

• Residents now have the ability to pay their tax bills via the internet. More information is available on the township’s website.
