Evesham School District BOE approves new five-year-contract for Superintendent John Scavelli
At a special Feb. 25 meeting of the Evesham School District Board of Education, the board approved a new five-year-contract for Superintendent John Scavelli Jr.
Two members of the nine-member-board removed themselves from the discussion and vote at the beginning of the meeting because of laws regulating who can vote on hiring matters if board members have relatives already working for the district.
Later, five of the remaining seven board members voted to award Scavelli a new contract after an almost two hour long meeting attended by hundreds of Evesham teachers, district employees, parents and residents.
William Donio Esq., the board’s solicitor, said even though two members abstained, legally the vote still required a majority of the full nine-member-board to vote “yes” for the contract to be approved. That meant out of the seven remaining board members, five had to vote “yes” for Scavelli’s contract for it to legally pass.
The five board members that voted to approve the contract were Joseph M. De Julius, Trish Everhart, Joanne Harmon, Lisa Mansfield and Dave Silver. Kevin Stone and Nichole Stone abstained from the vote when it was held.
Joseph Fisicaro Jr. and Sandy Student were the two board members that abstained because of relatives working for the district.
The vote was held after more than an hour of public comment where about 30 different Evesham teachers, administration members, faculty members, parents and residents all extolled the virtues and integrity of Scavelli. Each individual’s time at public comment was punctuated with loud cheers from the rest of the crowd.
