Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. has become a joyous tradition at Congregation M’kor Shalom, when the Unity Choir performs to crowds of over 1000 guests who share in the thrill of the music. With pride, the performance is presented as part of Congregation M’kor Shalom’s 40th Anniversary festivities.
This year, there are two celebrations. The first takes place at M’kor Shalom during Erev Shabbat services on Friday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. For the second celebration, the Unity Choir is honored to have been invited by New Jersey’s annual King Holiday Commemorative Celebration to perform on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. at The New Jersey State Museum in Trenton at 205 New Jersey Route 29. The Unity Choir is conducted by cantor Anita Hochman along with her colleagues and friends, the inspirational and gifted Beverly Collins, Evelyn Thomas and Donavon Soumas. Both events are open to the public.
A musical event that epitomizes the beauty of diversity and a reflection of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, the Unity Choir — made up of over 80 voices — sings music that ranges from the most high-spirited Gospel music to stimulating songs of freedom and uplifting Jewish folk music. This year it is all about the music, with limited speaker remarks.
This diverse group of voices of the Unity Choir includes the M’kor Shalom Choir along with choir members from churches, synagogues and organizations throughout the state of New Jersey.
Cantor Anita Hochman said, “It’s all about the music for us in 2014, and it is always so personally rewarding to work with my esteemed colleagues, Doctor Beverly Collins, Evelyn Thomas and Donavon Soumas and all the members of our Unity Choir. We are humbled by the response from all who attend as they connect to the music, rising from their seats, clapping and swaying and singing with full, open hearts.”
