Camden County cracks down on child support offenders

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office participated in a statewide sweep to pick up child support offenders and other individuals with active warrants last week. This operation captured 76 individuals with 102 active warrants out for their arrest and more than $1.39 million on warrants owed at the time of the arrest.

Sheriff Chuck Billingham said the operation was successful and provided accountability to individuals who are forgoing court ordered payments to support children.

“These sweeps take place on a regular basis in order to bring accountability to parents who forget about their fiduciary responsibility to their families,” Billingham said. “This operation sends a clear, loud message that we mean business and skipping on your child support payment is not a joke.”

During the sweep the Sheriff’s Office filed additional charges on individuals during the operation ranging from possession of controlled dangerous substance to resisting arrest. The arrests made last week, over the course of 48 hours, represent a small subsection of the 2,147 active Camden County fugitives with more than 6,000 total active warrants.

“The statewide sweeps have an impact,” Billingham said. “After bringing a busload of dead beat dads to the jail for processing these individuals know that they can’t run or hide from supporting their family.”
