The teachers and staff at both Indian Mills School and Indian Mills Memorial School banded together over the past month in support of two critically important causes: the fight against breast cancer and support for America’s troops.
Organized and led by the district’s school nurses, Heather Cosper, IMMS and Jen Simpson, IMS; and using the highly successful Susan G. Komen “Passionately Pink” fundraiser as the catalyst, the schools combined to raise $335 on Oct. 18 in support of the fight. The teachers in the district are no strangers to this disease, with current staff members either celebrating their successful fight to overcome the disease, or currently battling it. Each staff member enthusiastically donated at least $5 to help find a cure.
Three weeks later on Nov. 6, the staff again rallied together in support of the nation’s troops in a program sponsored by the GI GO Fund called “Jeans for Troops”. This is an NJEA endorsed program that helps service personnel find jobs, go to college, get health care and find housing.
“We have to do what we can for these brave heroes of ours. All too often, their sacrifice is taken for granted in this day of an all-volunteer force. While we might not be able to understand what they go through, we can show our appreciation in support of programs designed to help them when they come home for good,” Simpson said.
Coupled with a district in-service day, teachers wore jeans after donating $5. The teachers and staff collected $150 in that one day. For more information or to get involved, please visit the website, jeansfortroops@gigofund.org.
