Mayor’s Message: ‘Luncheon with the Arts’ June 19 for residents over 55

As the summer of 2013 kicks into high gear, residents of all ages have an abundance of opportunities to enjoy all that Cherry Hill has to offer — from outdoor entertainment, to programs for seniors, to an annual community celebration of our nation’s independence.

On June 19, the township will partner with the Katz JCC (1301 Springdale Road) for our next “Luncheon with the Arts” for residents over 55.

For just $5 per person ($8 at the door), guests will sit back, relax and enjoy the Sounds of Summer with The Sunshine Boys. A hot chicken lunch will be served following the entertainment.

As we enter July, we invite all residents to celebrate Independence Day with a special fireworks display on Wednesday, July 3, at Cherry Hill High School West, presented by the Cherry Hill Mall.

Gates to West’s Jonas Morris Memorial Stadium open at 7 p.m.; the night’s headlining band, No Commitment, will take the stage around 8, followed by a spectacular fireworks display around 9.

Admission is free; proceeds from refreshments sold will benefit the high school.

As in past years, alcohol, smoking and glass bottles are strictly prohibited. All bags, backpacks and coolers will be subject to search upon entry.

Gates to the stadium will close at 8:45 p.m., or once the stadium has reached capacity.

Full event details — including a map of permitted parking areas and street closures — can be found online at www.CherryHill-NJ.com.

July also ushers in the return of the popular Music Under the Stars Series, presented by the township Recreation Department and sponsored by Metro PCS and Concentra.

Starting at 6:30 every Tuesday evening, the whole family will enjoy free music on the front lawn of the historic Barclay Farmstead.
Bring a chair, a blanket and even a picnic dinner, just don’t forget your appetite for great music!
Concerts are cancelled in the event of rain. A full schedule of performers can be found online at www.CherryHill-NJ.com.
Speaking of Barclay — if it’s history you’re looking for this summer, check out our free, guided tours of the 19th-century Quaker farmhouse from noon to 4 p.m. every Wednesday, and on the first Sunday of the month through November.
While you’re there, walk the surrounding nature trails, and visit the community gardens. The First Sunday tours include a special craft activity, as well.
Tours are free to Cherry Hill residents; for non-residents, admission is $5.
Non-resident seniors and students receive a special admission price of $3.
For more information on the Barclay Farmstead, call the Historical Commission at (856) 795–6225.
You can also have some fun on your own time, any time, at one of Cherry Hill’s 52 parks and playgrounds.
Walk our expansive system of nature trails, enjoy an outdoor picnic, or take the kids to play at one of our neighborhood playgrounds.
Check out the newly-renovated Erlton Park, which received a full facelift this year with the help of a $25,000 Camden County grant. Upgrades include new swings, new equipment for children ages 2 to 5, new fitness equipment with instructional sign boards, and a resurfaced tennis court and softball field.
As you can see, there’s something for everyone this summer in Cherry Hill. So get up and get outside while the weather is at its best! I welcome your feedback on our recreational programs and events. Let me know what you think: Call my office at (856) 488–7878, or e-mail me directly at MayorCahn@chtownship.com. I hope to see you around town!
