Your article, May 22–28, “Is Christie’s tax cap working?” a step in the right direction is probably a “yes,” but I’ll tell you what Gov. Christie has done, which is a step in the wrong direction.
The homestead rebate for senior citizens has been cut by the Christie administration.
The cut has probably only been realized by eligible taxpayers 65 and over. The requirements for the senior homestead rebate are (1) be 65 years or older (2) property taxes to be paid by the homeowner and (3) our gross income to be lower than a specified amount.
Since Gov. Christie has come into office, I have paid $6,500 more in property taxes.
Seniors pay the full tax bill, then are reimbursed an approved amount of their money, by the state.
I’m sure every eligible senior in the state is well aware of this increase in property taxes since the governor came into office.
What other group of taxpayers in the state has been hit harder? If seniors leave their homes to reduce their “№1 in the country” property tax burden, they would probably be replaced by a father, mother and two or three children.
This would significantly increase financial burdens for New Jersey.
