The following incident was released by the Cherry Hill Police Department.
On March 5 at 1:06 p.m., police observed a suspicious device along the curb line on the south side of the Friendly Food Mart located at the Springdale Plaza, 1900 Greentree Road.
The device was pineapple shaped similar to that of a grenade with white smoke emanating from it.
Police immediately closed the area surrounding the intersection of Greentree and Springdale Roads to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic and evacuated stores within the plaza.
The Camden County Bomb Squad responded to the location and rendered the device safe.
The device was determined to be a smoke bomb in the shape of a grenade. After approximately 45 minutes the roads and surrounding area were reopened.
A 25-year-old man of the unit block of Brighton Avenue in Lindenwold was located in close proximity to the device and gave conflicting information as to his reason for being there.
The man later confessed to finding the device, lighting it and trying to leave prior to the police discovery.
The man was charged with maintaining a nuisance and possession of a destructive device and remanded to the Camden County Jail.
