Hit-and-run suspect arrested

A Berlin resident was arrested for the hit-and-run accident that left two young on the side of theĀ road.

According to the police report released by Voorhees Township police, on Saturday, Jan. 12, at approximately 6:30 p.m. two women were struck by a red or maroon Ford or Mercury sedan on Haddonfield-Berlin Road and North SunsetĀ Drive.

Camille Calalang, 28, and her cousin Lauren Jimenez, 20, were crossing CR 561 when they were struck by a vehicle heading southbound, the report said. Both victims were transported to Cooper Trauma Center and are recovering from their injuries, the reportĀ said.

Michele Toussaint, 44, was arrested and charged with leaving a scene of an accident, two counts of endangering an injured victim and causing injury while driving under a suspended license, the report said. Toussaint is in custody at the Camden County Correctional Facility. Bail is set at $62,500, the releaseĀ said.

Toussaint reportedly fled the scene of the accident without reporting the crash, the report said. The passenger rearview mirror was left behind at the scene along with other evidence left at the scene allowed Voorhees police to identify the car as a 2006 Ford Fusion, the reportĀ said.

Voorhees Police Chief Louis Bordi said an anonymous tip helped identify the vehicle. The tip lead them to the 200 block of Stephens Place in Magnolia where police found the Ford parked in the street, the reportĀ said.

The vehicle had damage consistent with evidence found at the scene, the reportĀ said.

According to the police report, on Sunday, Jan. 13, at around 6:40 p.m. Voorhees Police stopped a vehicle for making an illegal turn. Toussaint was identified as the passenger of the vehicle and taken into custody, the reportĀ said.

Toussaint claimed she was on her way to the police to turn herself in, the reportĀ said.
