MAYOR: ‘Buy local’ in Cherry Hill

The holiday season is quickly winding down, and malls, shopping centers and boutique stores across Cherry Hill and the entire South Jersey region are brimming with people looking for the last few perfect presents for their loved ones.

Fortunately, Cherry Hill residents don’t need to travel far to find unique and wonderful gifts for everyone on their list.

From the array of retailers at the Cherry Hill Mall, to the large-scale stores, to the small specialty shops across the Township, there truly is something for everyone right here in our hometown.

As we enter this last week of holiday shopping, this is the perfect time to remind ourselves of the importance of supporting the local economy and committing to shopping locally — particularly when we are fortunate enough to live in a town like Cherry Hill, which such a robust array of retail options.

This “buy local” approach, heralded by Camden County and its Buy Camden County program, provides a number of benefits for the community.

For example, county officials estimate that, if each household in Camden County moved just $10 of its out-of-county retail spending to in-county spending, the economic benefit would total roughly $35 million a year.

Additionally, supporting the local economy:

• Promotes local job growth and supports existing jobs that are held by our own neighbors.

• Saves time and money that are otherwise spent on long commutes and fuel consumption.

• Is more environmentally friendly. Shorter commutes mean fewer cars on the road for a less time, as well as less gas our cars are burning off and sending into the air.

• Provides access to great products at a tremendous value. Not only do our local merchants offer a full array of items, but they offer very competitive and attractive prices. That savings grows even more when you factor in the fuel and time savings. Local merchants also tend to consider the needs of their regular customers when they catalog their inventory.

• Last but not least, it builds a sense of pride in community. Local businesses care about this community. They support local events and causes, and often help sponsor programs run by the Township, schools and other organizations around town. We should return the favor and support them, as well.

A few weeks ago, SJ Magazine asked me for my favorite local shopping spots. Not surprisingly, the three I talked about were all located in Cherry Hill, and have all been longtime favorites of residents around the region.

That’s largely because, like many local retailers, their selection and prices are second-to-none, and the personalized experience just cannot be beat. In short, there really is no reason to shop anywhere but in Cherry Hill, during the holidays and all year long.

With that said, while you’re out looking for those must-have items for everyone on your list, remember that common sense and caution go a long way toward keeping the holiday season happy and healthy for all.

Regardless of where you shop and when, the Cherry Hill Police Department reminds shoppers to keep packages in the trunk of your car when shopping and never leave packages in your car overnight. You should always be aware of your surroundings, park in well-lit areas, and have your keys ready when you exit a store, particularly at night. Additionally, never carry or show large sums of cash. Notify store security or police of suspicious activity and teach children to go to store clerks or guards if they become separated from you.

Again, as you finalize your preparations for the upcoming holidays, remember to support your local merchants. You won’t be disappointed.

On behalf of township council and everyone in town hall, have a safe, happy and healthy holiday season!

Mayor Chuck Cahn
