MAYOR: Wellness campaign kicking into high gear

The Mayor’s Wellness Campaign is kicking into high gear for the winter, and with the help of our Wellness Partners, my office is working hard to enhance our health-conscious programming — starting with next Wednesday’s Walk with the Mayor.

This monthly event, which launched as a pilot program in August, invites residents to join me, my staff, and other active community members on a brisk 2-mile walk around the inside of the Cherry Hill Mall. It begins at 8 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month, including next Wednesday, Dec. 19.

From December through February, the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign has teamed up with one of our newest partners to offer residents even more incentive to walk with us.

On Dec. 19, Jan. 16, and Feb. 20, representatives from Lourdes Health System will be on site to offer participants a variety of free health screenings, as well as free giveaways for participants, and face time with physicians from Lourdes’ new ambulatory care center on Brace Road, which is scheduled to open in 2013.

These offerings, combined with the walk itself, offer residents a fun, informational — and, of course, free — way to start their mornings through these dark, cold winter months.

It’s a great way to end 2012 on a health note, and one way to stick with those New Year’s Resolutions going into 2013.

Bring your families, your friends, your neighbors, or even your coworkers, and come check us out. Participants are welcome to stay for the whole thing, or for as long as your schedule will allow.

We are typically finished by about 8:30 — and if you can only walk a mile with us, it’s better than not walking at all!

As an added bonus, the Cherry Hill Mall will be open for its holiday hours in December, meaning stores will be open for business to allow some last-minute holiday (or just recreational) shopping when you’re finished. As always, light refreshments such as water and granola bars, will be available compliments of the Mall.

If walking isn’t your thing, or if the Wednesday morning format doesn’t fit your lifestyle, don’t fret. There are dozens of other programs available through the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign all year long, from dance classes for children to seminars, fitness classes and dance instruction for adults. In late winter and spring, Kennedy Health System joins the township to present a full slate of interactive seminars geared toward our adult and active adult populations.

And these are just a few of the events that fall under the umbrella of Mayor’s Wellness.

For more information on the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign and for a full listing of events, go to www.CherryHill-NJ.com.

You can also find wellness-related activities in our quarterly Community Magazine, labeled with a red heart.

To register for our upcoming events, call (856) 488–7878, or email [email protected].

With that said, I’d like to take a moment to thank the mall for its continued support of this program, and Lourdes for this new partnership. I look forward to seeing our Walks with the Mayor grow and thrive as much as possible in the months to come.

The Mayor’s Wellness Program would be nothing if not for the support of all of our wellness partners. There are many, and the list continues to grow. To inquire about becoming a partner, contact Donna Dovey at (856) 488–7878.

I wholeheartedly believe that a healthy community is a happy community, and I want all our residents to enjoy only the happiest and healthiest of lives. I hope to see you next Wednesday!

Mayor Chuck Cahn
