Residents participate in Rachel’s Challenge

Rachel’s Challenge is a program based on the life of Rachel Scott, the first person killed in the Columbine high school shooting tragedy of 1999. Before her death, Rachel had written an essay about her goals for her life. She cared deeply about making students feel welcome and a part of the Columbine community. Each day she tried to reach out to others in a kind and compassionate way. When her family found her essay along with her journal writings, they created the Rachel’s Challenge program to extend her message of respecting all people despite our differences.

Powerful footage of Rachel’s life and the Columbine tragedy will be presented during a one-hour school assembly. The goal is to motivate our students for positive change in the way they treat others. Freshmen and Sophomore students will see the presentation entitled Rachel’s Challenge where they will be presented with five character challenges supported by Rachel’s vision of kindness and compassion. Junior and Senior students will be presented with “Rachel’s Legacy” that will further enhance the messages of spreading kindness within our community.

The leaders of the Friends of Rachel Club promote Rachel’s Scott’s message of spreading kindness and compassion within the Bishop Eustace community. They are responsible for creating, organizing and implementing school projects that support this mission. They plan monthly club meetings with projects, videos, discussions and acts of kindness, all surrounding the ideas of respecting one another through being kind and compassionate.
