The Burlington County Superintendent of Elections office is encouraging residents who have recently moved, changed their name, or are new residents in Burlington County, to check their personal voter information by visiting the State Division of Elections website.
“If you fall into one of these categories you should update your voter record now,” said Freeholder Joseph Howarth, liaison to the Superintendent of Elections’ office.“This will ensure you receive voter information at the right address, and that come Election Day, you will avoid challenges to your vote or having to vote by provisional ballot.”
Those wishing to check their registration should visit: http://www.state.nj.us/state/elections.
From there, residents should click “Voter Information” in the list on the left side of the page, select “Am I Registered,” and follow the prompts to verify their information. If the record is incorrect, or cannot be found, the voter will need to complete a new registration and send it to the Superintendent of Elections.
According to Superintendent Joanne Nyikita, voters often move but do not realize that need to notify her office of their address change. As a result, the registration book in their new polling place does not have their information, and they must cast a provisional (paper) ballot.
“If they normally vote by mail-in ballot, and haven’t updated their record, that ballot could be sent to their old address and returned to the County Clerk as undeliverable,” Nyikita said. The same applies to those who change their names. To avoid any challenges to their vote, or having to vote provisionally, they should take the time now to update their record.”
The deadline to vote in the upcoming Nov. 6 election is Oct. 16.
Registration forms are available on the County website (www.co.burlington.nj.us — then click the “Vote” icon on the right side of the home page), or at the municipal clerk’s office. All forms are postage-paid and can be completed and returned by mail.
The Superintendent of Elections is located at 755 Eayrestown Road in Lumberton, and can be reached by phone at (609) 265–5111. Normal operating hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The office will be open until 9 p.m. on Oct. 16 to accommodate last minute registrants.
