Heroic action recognized, new curriculum presented

Summer is never dull in Mt. Laurel Schools with more than 1,000 students enrolled in regular and special summer programs through the district.

“We never sleep,” laughed Superintendent Dr. Antoinette Rath at the Board of Education’s mid-summer meeting on Tuesday, July 24.

A special staff member was recognized for her recent efforts, a heroic action that Board President Ronald Frey said the district could not let go under the current.

Denise Marshall, from Springville School’s extended day-care program, saved the life of a choking child by acting appropriately and timely.

“This is one of the things that defines Mt. Laurel,” said Rath. “Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.”

The Board also recognized a plethora of members and the coaches of Harrington Middle School’s championship track and field team. According to officials, the team won the South Jersey Middle School League Championship as well as the Moorestown Relay Championship.

Mt. Laurel was recently designated as a high performing district for 2011–2012, coming in above the 80 percentile in all five domains examined over the past several months, said Rath, in reference to the Quality Single Accountability Continuum (QSAC.)

“We are up there,” she said. “I’m very pleased.”

The schools are beginning to look into a new breakfast program, said Robert Wachter, Jr., assistant superintendent for business and board secretary. More updates will be coming in August and September.

Twenty-one new certified staff members were appointed to their roles at the meeting, plus one uncertified play aide.

Dr. Sheila Miller, curriculum supervisor, explained new additions to curriculum through a presentation in areas of technology, social studies and challenged based learning.

The updates, which range to make impacts on all district schools, will update the curriculum to meet Common Core Standards.

The next regular Board of Education meeting this summer will be held at the Hattie Britt Administration Building at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 28.
