Red light cameras on hiatus

The red light camera at Route 70 and Springdale Road has been suspended from operation following a decision by the state Department of Transportation to review 63 of them because of yellow-light timers.

According to national standards, yellow lights must remain lit one second for every 10 mph of the speed limit at an intersection. If the speed limit, for example, is 45 mph, the yellow light must remain solid for 4.5 seconds. If the speed limit is 30 mph, the yellow light must remain solid for 3 seconds.

According to reports, the DOT is questioning whether the yellow lights at the 63 named red-light cameras — including the one in Cherry Hill — are properly timed. The DOT says that when these aforementioned cameras were installed, it wasn’t immediately known if the yellow lights were properly timed.

Beginning Wednesday, June 20, and until officials can be sure the yellow lights are properly timed, tickets will not be issued at or by these red-light cameras.

The only other camera in question in Camden County is in Strattford.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
