Wine, tournaments and hot summer days in Mt. Laurel

The birthplace of Alice Paul beckons you to visit this summer with a wine tasting, programs and tours. Mt. Laurel baseball has plenty of summer tournaments to attend on those hot, summer days. Mt. Laurel Library is host to a wide array of family-friendly fun. With so many hometown options, the beach may be difficult to visit. Pencil some of these summer events on to your calendars.

Friday, June 1: Celebrating Historic Paulsdale Wine Tasting

Visit the fifth annual wine tasting event at Alice Paul Institute, 128 Hooton Road. Hors d’oeuvres will be served by The Capital Grille of Cherry Hill. Andreotti’s Viennese Café will serve homemade pastries and wine. Rastelli Foods will also serve wine presented by wine educator Dawn Cisler. Admission costs $50. Friday, June 1 to Saturday, June 2: Relay for Life

Head out to Lenape High School, 235 Hartford Road, at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 1, to support the fight against cancer and to celebrate with survivors at the 2012 Relay for Life. There are at least 194 participants currently signed up with 24 teams. And, $33,928 has already been raised. The opening ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. on June 1 followed by the survivor lap. At 10 p.m., there will be a luminaria ceremony. Closing ceremonies will commence at 8:30 a.m. on June 2.

Tuesday, June 5: Zimriyah Choral Festival

All are invited to an evening of song at Adath Emanu-El, 205 Elbo Lane at 7:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend, but the temple encourages guests to bring donations to be given to the Betsy and Peter Fischer Food Pantry of Samost Jewish Family and Children’s Service.

Friday, June 8 to Tuesday, June 12: “Non-District” Baseball Tournament

As part of the Mt. Laurel Summer Slam, Mt. Laurel Baseball will be hosting three tournaments this summer. This tournament is for all 9- to 12-year-old players. All games will be played at Laurel Acres Park, 1045 South Church St. Learn more at www.mtlaurelbaseball.com.

Saturdays, June 9, July 14, Aug. 11: Paulsdale Second Saturday Tours

No appointment is necessary on the second Saturday of each summer month to visit the Alice Paul Institute, 128 Hooton Road. Tours are available at noon and 1 p.m. Each begins with a 15-minute presentation prior to the house tour. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased online at www.alicepaul.org.

Sunday, June 10: Jazz with Marlene VerPlanck at the library

Jazz singer Marlene VerPlanck is heading to the Mt. Laurel Library, 100 Walt Whitman Ave., on June 10 at 2 p.m., for a free concert open to the public. Registration is not required. The concert was funded through a Wegmans grant. VerPlanck is originally from New Jersey, but tours around the world. Wednesdays: June 13, June 20, June 27, July 11, July 18 July 25: Senior Citizen Wise (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education) Program

Wednesdays in June and July, head to the community center behind the police station, 100 Mt. Laurel Road, for a workshop for seniors aged 60 and older. Registration is necessary, but admission is free. The program will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will teach the senior community simple tools about their health, benefits of their age and behaviors to avoid in maintaining health. Friday, June 15 to Tuesday, June 19: “District” Baseball Tournament

The second of the Summer Slam series, this is MLB’s traditional tournament and will be open to all 9 through 12 year olds. All games will be played at Laurel Acres Park, 1045 South Church St., Mt. Laurel. Learn more at www.mtlaurelbaseball.com.

Sunday, June 17: U.S. Open Father’s Day Tournament

Ramblewood Country Club, 200 Country Club Parkway, is hosting a Father’s Day tournament. Shotgun is at 10 a.m., with a 2:30 p.m. lunch and a U.S. Open viewing party to follow. Sunday, June 24: Mt. Laurel Craft Fair

The Friends of the Mt. Laurel Library are hosting a craft fair at the library, 100 Walt Whitman Ave., Mt. Laurel. The rain date is July 1. Monday, June 25 to Monday Aug. 6: Mt. Laurel Recreation summer classes

Two classes are being offered this summer by Mt. Laurel Recreation, a Mommy and Me Movement class and a Tumblin’ Tots class. They are six-week sessions being held on Monday evenings. There will be no class July 16. The Mommy and Me class costs $54 to attend and is for 18-month to 2.5 year olds and their parents. The class is said to improve your toddler’s motor skills and coordination while they gain social skills. The class is held from 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Tumblin’ Tots will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. for two and a half to four year olds and will help to make fitness fun for the youngsters. The cost of attendance is $66. Classes will be held at the Mt. Laurel Community Center, 100 Mt. Laurel Road. Registration and payment can be sent to that address as well. Thursday, June 28: Alice Paul Goes to College

From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., head out to the Alice Paul Institute, 128 Hooton Road, in Mt. Laurel for a program by J.D. Zahniser on Alice Paul’s college years. Tickets are $10. The gift shop will feature new items and refreshments will be served. Go online to www.alicepaul.org for more information or to purchase tickets.

Monday, July 2 to Friday, Aug. 24: Summer Recreation Program

Want to send your kids to camp this summer? The Mt. Laurel Summer Recreation Program will be held at Springville Elementary School, 520 Hartford Road, Mt. Laurel. Children five to 12 are invited to attend. Half-day camp is priced at $450 per child. Full day camp is $650 per child. There will be plenty of fun activities for the kids, from arts and crafts to theme days such as beach and crazy hat day. Learn more at www.mountlaurel.com and return registration forms to 100 Mt. Saturday, July 14 to Saturday, Sept. 22: BCC Summer Art Exhibition

Burlington County College student, alumni and art from the local community will be on display throughout the campus. The opening reception on July 14 will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. People can view the art at Creations Gallery in Pemberton, the Enterprise Center in Mt. Laurel, and the Willingboro Center. Wednesday, July 25 and Thursday, July 26: Summer S.T.E.P. presents “The Little Easy”

Thursday, Aug. 23: Paws Farm Bird Festival

Head out to Paws Farm Nature Center, 1105 Hainesport-Mt. Laurel Road, at 10 a.m. for a bird festival. This event is for children 4 to 9. Admission is $3 for members and $5 for members. Get banded like a bird, create a nest, and look for some birds through binoculars. A snack in the nature of the day will commence the fun.
