Summer lends itself well to the Tabernacle community.
From the Pine Barrens Festival featuring town-specific nights to Volunteer Day to the 84th annual Carranza Memorial Service, there are plenty of events to choose from to enjoy as the temperatures rise. Pencil some of these on to your calendars.
Saturday, June 2: Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
This is a training course for adults to help understand the revised camping guidelines with the Boy Scouts of America. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with lunch provided at Pine Tree Education and Environmental Center, 110 Buttersworth Bog Road, Tabernacle. Participation is priced at $25. Saturday, June 9: Volleyball Tournament at Delanco Camp

Thursday, June 14 to Monday, June 18: 17th annual Pinelands Classic
Be sure to head out to the longest-running baseball tournament in South Jersey. Patty Bowker Park, 112 Patty Bowker Road, will be alive with baseball, food and fun with trophies awarded for first- and second-place teams. Saturday, June 16: Volunteer Day and Emergency Services Building Open House
Volunteer organizations will be on hand to share with the community about what they do. Some groups will be selling food. The event will take place in the cafeteria and parking lot of the Tabernacle Elementary School and the Tabernacle Emergency Services Building on New Road from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Coinciding with Volunteer Day, a parade of emergency service vehicles will commence from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and end with the dedication of the new Tabernacle Emergency Services Building at 10:30 a.m. An open house will occur there from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking will be available for both events at Olson Middle School, 132 New Road, with handicap-accessible parking at the Rescue Squad and on the south side of the elementary school. Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17: Fun with Sons Weekends
If this weekend doesn’t fit into your schedule, head out Saturday July 14 and Sunday July 15 or Saturday July 28 and Sunday July 29 for a weekend of overnight fun with your son with the Boy Scouts of America at Pine Tree Education & Environmental Center, 110 Buttersworth Bog Road. Admission is $75 per pair and includes all meals and snacks, camp cabins with bunk beds, hot showers, electricity, camp T-shirts for attendees, activities and programs, including swimming, BB shooting, hiking, archery and a campfire. Participants are required to complete a Boy Scouts of America medical form, parts A and B, available on the website, www.bccbsa.org.
Monday, July 9 to Friday, August 10: Girl Scouts day camp at Inawendiwin
The Girl Scouts have a full summer of programs in store at Camp Inawediwin, 71 Powell Place Road. Programs are $225 for a week unless noted otherwise. Saturday, July 14: the 84th annual Carranza Memorial Service
Sponsored by Mt. Holly VFW Post №11, this yearly event has been going on for decades. Capt. Emilio Carranza Rodriguez was the Charles Lindbergh of Mexico. He died in 1928 on his way back to Mexico after a goodwill mission to the United States. The event in his honor will be held at the Carranza Memorial, located on Carranza Road in Shamong at 1 p.m., rain or shine. Monday, July 23 to Saturday, July 28: Pine Barrens Festival
While “Tabernacle Night” isn’t until Saturday, July 28, this festival is sure to be huge again this year. Housed at the Church of the Holy Eucharist, 520 Medford Lakes Road, in the heart of Tabernacle, the festival will be open nightly from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. with games and rides opening at 6:30 p.m. There will be free parking as well. The Canvas Café menu will include cheesesteaks, chicken breast sandwiches, hamburgers, fries, salads, and ice cold beverages. A seafood and beer garden will also be on site, serving up ice cold beer, crabs, shrimp, clams, corn on the cob, buffalo ears, crab fries and more. Nightly entertainment will liven the air, and an hourly 50/50 raffle will occur. Last year’s super 50/50 winner took home over $18,000. Learn more at www.pinebarrensfestival.org.
Tuesday, July 24 to Thursday, July 26: Tiger Twilight Camp 2012
Be sure to arrive before the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. for the Tiger Twilight Camp, “Rootin’ Tootin’ Cowboys” at the Pine Tree Education and Environmental Center, 110 Buttersworth Bog Road, Tabernacle. Camp will end by 8:15 p.m. each night. This three-night event through the Boy Scouts of America is open to boys who are Cub Scouts at the time of registration, who have graduated from kindergarten and are entering the first-grade. A parent must also attend. Parents and the boys will receive T-shirts.
There will be crafts, sports, a nature study, games including archery and water games, science, and, of course, a campfire. The cost of attendance is $36 and is due by June 29.
