Bikeshare program goes county-wide

More than 200 used bicycles collected by the Camden County Division of Environmental Affairs stand ready to be refurbished and distributed this spring, according to Freeholder Jeffrey Nash. The Freeholders will soon launch a county-wide bike share program that will loan repurposed bicycles to county residents for a nominal membership fee.

“We are looking for volunteers with bicycle repair experience, or those willing to learn,” said Nash. “We have 12 volunteers so far — several of which are ready to repurpose the bikes, making them safe and functioning for riders.”

In addition to experienced bicycle mechanics, and those willing to train others in bicycle repair, the County is seeking volunteers to staff their local Bike Share distribution points once they are established.

“We are reaching out to Camden County municipalities to identify Bike Share distribution points,” Nash said. “Many municipalities are along the Camden County Multi-Use Trail Network that provides riders with hundreds of miles of recreational opportunities.”

The Camden County Freeholders have made advocating and implementing more bike trails and alternative means of transportation throughout the region a priority. This public policy initiative is another opportunity for residents to get out of their cars and onto a bike in order to traverse County trails and roadways. Whether it’s a daily commute to work or riding for recreation this program will provide a two wheel option for a small sum for residents.

This program has been modeled after other metropolitan bike shares throughout the country and a current operation in Collingswood.

“Bicycles are also needed for the program, both in working order or for use as parts,” Nash said.

Bike repairs will take place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings at the Camden County Health and Executive Campus at Lakeland, where the program will be based. The campus in Gloucester Township contains 2.5 miles of bike trails.

If you are interested in volunteering your time to the Camden County Bike Share program, or have a bicycle to donate, please contact the Camden County Division of Environmental Affairs at (856) 858–5241 or email [email protected].
