Suds at the Indian King Tavern in Haddonfield

Here ye, here ye, the Indian King Tavern is open for business and selling pints of beer to Haddonfield customers for the first time since the 1870's! Well, it’s not completely back to being a working tavern, but for one day it featured beer tasting to thirsty customers for a good cause.

Mayor Tish Colombi cracked open the first cask of ale with a “bong” (a historic wooden, mallet like tool to open kegs) and customers flocked into the gardens to try several varieties of beer provided by Yards Brewery.

The tasting helped raised money for the Indian King Tavern’s fundraising goal of $9,130. The tavern received a $50,000 grant from the state, of which $16,850 must be matched. The tavern has already raised $7,720 of the needed matching funds.

If the tavern receives the grant, it’s planning on adding a third piece of the structure that was demolished many years ago called “The Ark,” which would make the tavern about a third bigger than it currently is. Colombi said with the expansion the tavern would be able to be rented for weddings, business functions, or catered events.
