Local ShopRite teaches students about healthy eating

Released by ShopRite of Medford

In an effort to bring a new approach to learning and to demonstrate the importance of home, school, and community working together, the ShopRite of Medford and St. Mary of the Lakes Elementary School took part in the Young Consumers Program. This hands-on program is designed to sharpen problem-solving skills in math, language arts, science, social studies, and health, while teaching students the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Several school visits were scheduled to prepare students, teachers, and ShopRite associates for the culminating field trip to ShopRite of Medford on April 23.

St. Mary’s fourth and fifth-graders started their Young Consumers journey in October with classroom visits from Coach Howie, creator of the Young Consumers Program. Using tangrams, stacking cups, and the Tower of Hanoi puzzle, students worked on their problem solving abilities. Currently, these students are practicing and integrating these concepts to improve student achievement across the curriculum.

ShopRite of Medford Registered Dietitian, Meghan Locantora, visited fourth and fifth-grade students in March for National Nutrition Month lessons to prepare them for their field trip. They learned about the new MyPlate food icon and how to shop for healthy, balanced meals.

While at ShopRite, students had the opportunity to apply their skills outside the classroom by solving various problems and puzzles. They were also given the task of shopping on a budget for healthy meals to feed a family of four.

Zallie’s ShopRite of Medford supports local schools through various programs coordinated by the dietitian.

Further details and programs can be found on their website at www.zalliesfreshkitchen.com.

The Zallie Family believes these programs will prepare the students for being a more informed and healthy shopper.
