Medford Friends consider effects of Afghan war

Medford Leas, a not-for-profit community guided by Quaker principles and Medford Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends are pleased to present the provocative traveling art exhibit “Window & Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan.”

Featuring 25 large-scale murals by American and international artists, the exhibit was created by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in collaboration with the Philadelphia Mural Arts program and the Chicago Public Art Group. The exhibit is an invitation to reflect upon the impact of this war on a civilian population caught in the crossfire.

It memorializes the Afghan civilian casualties and focuses on the human cost of the war. These gifted artists give us “windows” on a war-torn country and “mirrors” reflecting our own identity as a nation at war.

“It is the hope of the AFSC that visitors to ‘Windows and Mirrors’ will join us in the nationwide dialogue about the war and how we can move toward positive alternatives,” said Mary Zerkel, national tour director of “Windows and Mirrors.” “We hope that each person will make a commitment to speak to just 10 of their friends, family or neighbors about the human cost of the war in Afghanistan.”

The exhibit will be open for viewing at Medford Leas on Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A highlight of this two-day exhibit is a special address by Shan Cretin, general secretary, AFSC, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 10 in the theater.

A simple buffet lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.

On Sunday, March 11, the exhibit will be open at Medford Leas from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The free event is to be held in the arts and social wing of the community building on the Medford Campus. Reservations for the luncheon on Saturday are appreciated, as space is limited.

Call (609) 654–3527 to confirm your attendance at Medford Leas.
