If you bought Turkish pine nuts in bulk at a Wegmans Food Market in Woodbridge, Manalapan, Ocean, Bridgewater, Mount Laurel, Cherry Hill or Princeton, take ’em back.
Wegmans has recalled 5,000 pounds of nuts from bulk food departments in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland, the Associated Press said. Salmonella has struck 42 people.
It’s only the Turkish nuts that got recalled, and only those sold in bulk.
The tainted pine nuts, which were imported from Turkey by Sunrise Commodities of Englewood Cliffs, were sold between July 1 and Oct. 18, according to Wegman’s. People started getting sick Aug. 20.
So far, New York has suffered the worst of it, with 26 people getting sick. Eight people were sickened in Pennsylvania, four in Virginia, and just two in New Jersey. Arizona and Maryland each reported one person apiece.
Only two people have been hospitalized, and none have died.
Salmonella bacteria can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.
