Text a tip coming to a phone near you in Marlton

Do you have a cell phone or a smart phone of some kind? Instead of downloading the latest version of Angry Birds, perhaps you’d like to check out a new feature that could better serve the Evesham Township community and make it a safer place to live.

The Evesham Police Department launches a national tip411 anonymous text program, which will add a new dimension of eyes and ears on the streets of Evesham to help create a safer community.

The Evesham Police Department is launching tip411, an Internet based tool that enables the public to text message an anonymous tip to police, and lets the police respond back creating a two-way anonymous “chat”.

Reserved exclusively for Public Safety purposes and powered by CitizenObserver, a St. Paul Minn. company, tip411 puts a powerful new crime-fighting tool into the hands of the township community for all ages and demographics, department representative Walt Miller said.

“We’re proud to be part of a national program that benefits over 1000 communities around the county,” Miller said. “This new capability will help our citizens play an active role in keeping neighborhoods safer, it will engage a younger demographic in the process, and it will save our agency time and resources.”

Anyone with a cell phone can now send an anonymous tip to Evesham Police Department by texting the word ETPDTIP and the tip information to 847411 (tip411).

Anonymous web tips can also be submitted right from the Police Department’s website at www.eveshampd.org. On the left side of the home page is a citizen tip tab, which will direct Internet users to the tip411 site.

User can also access the Tip441 site via the Evesham Police Department’s Facebook fan page. On the left side of the Evesham Police Department’s Fan page there is a Submit A Tip tab on the upper left side of the page under the Evesham Police profile image/Evesham Police logo.

All of these options are 100 percent anonymous for the citizen submitting the crime or safety tip. CitizenObserver’s technology removes all identifying information before the police department sees the tip, so there’s no way to identify the sender.

Police Chief Michael Barth said this will be a welcome addition to crime prevention in Evesham Township.

“When someone feels afraid to come forward, or simply feels like they don’t want to get involved,” Barth said. “This can be a great way to pass information on without fear of retribution.”
