Sean Gray, a senior at Seneca High School, has become the first lacrosse player and male athlete from the school to be accepted to a Division I college for lacrosse. Gray recently committed to Wagner University in New York on a combined athletic and academic scholarship.
He made his decision after visiting the university for a second time and spending a weekend at the campus during September with the entire coaching staff and team. During that overnight visit, he also had an opportunity to watch a full team practice and meet most of the players presently on the team.
“I was looking at four or five different schools,” Gray said. “I decided on Wagner University because it was a good opportunity to play lacrosse at a Division I school and stay close to home.”
Gray has been playing lacrosse for the past seven years and throughout high school has picked up many accolades. He is currently a captain of the team and has been a four-year varsity player.
Throughout his years, he was a First Team All Conference, Second Team All South Jersey Defense selection (Philadelphia Inquirer) and a “South Jersey Player to Watch” (Philadelphia Inquirer), following his junior-year season.
During the past few summers, he has played in various tournaments with the Braveheart Lacrosse Club’s top high school team, which was coached by Pat McDonough, who is also the head lacrosse coach at Penn Charter High School. He was also nominated to attend the Blue Chip 225 Camp — Elite Division at Bryant University, Rhode Island during the summer of 2011.
Gray also participates in other sports at Seneca High School. He is presently a captain of the varsity football team where he plays both offense, fullback, and defense, linebacker.
Prior to high school, Gray played lacrosse, sixth through eighth grade, as part of the Seneca Youth Lacrosse Program and was selected to participate on the U.S. Lacrosse U-15 New Jersey-South All Star Team which played in a National All Star Tournament in Lake George, N.Y., during 2008.
Gray wants to study either sports management or business in college and hopes to coach lacrosse one day.
“I wanted to thank and recognize Coach Rob Davidson, Seneca head lacrosse coach, and Coach Bill Fisher, Seneca head football coach, for their mentoring, guidance and support during my years at Seneca,” Gray said in an email.
