There are a few simple things that you the homeowner can do to safeguard your home and belongings. First, insure that all of the locks on your doors and windows are functioning properly and that you secure your vehicles during the day as well as at night.

Second be aware of your neighborhood and look for suspicious activity such as strange cars or trucks in areas not previously seen. Notify the State Police if your house will be unoccupied for an extended period of time. Keep a trusted neighbor informed if you will be away for a lengthy period leaving them a way of reaching you if an emergency should arise. In turn, look after your neighbor’s house when they are away. This includes collecting mail, newspapers and other deliveries that, if not collected, are an obvious indicator that no one is home.

In the event that you do observe any suspicious activity do not attempt to intervene but record what you observe, taking note of a license plate number and/or make of vehicle if safely possible. Any physical descriptions of individuals involved and a description of the activity they are engaged would also be of great assistance, but again do so only if same can be gained safely. Report all suspicious activity and information to the New Jersey State Police by calling 859–2282.

In the event of an emergency, or if you actually witness or are the victim of a break-in, call 911 immediately.
