Medford Arts Center welcomes statewide watercolor show

The Medford Arts Center is delighted to welcome the 2011 Members’ Exhibit of the prestigious Garden State Watercolor Society to its galleries. The art show opened on June 25 and continues at the MAC, 18 North Main Street, Medford through July 24. The Garden State Watercolor Society is a statewide nonprofit group organized in 1970 to provide exhibitions, workshops and services to watercolor artists and to educate the public in the beauty and creativity of artists painting in this media.

Guest juror for this show was Joel Popadics, a past president of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and education chairman of the Ridgewood Art Institute, where he also teaches. Mr. Popadics has won many national awards for his paintings and his work and articles have been featured in national art magazines. He chose three awards of excellence, four merit awards and four honorable mentions from among the 57 entries on exhibit.

Best of Show winner was Sandra L. Jones of Burlington, New Jersey for her unnamed painting of a commercial fishing boat docked at the Jersey shore. Jones, who holds a BFA in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, has exhibited widely throughout the area and won many awards. She is recognized for her work in a diversity of themes and media. Maureen Gass-Brown of Willingboro took an Award of Excellence for her watercolor “Garden of Dreams.”

The Medford Arts Center is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

The center will be closed during August and reopens September 9 with “America: An Artist’s Reflection,” an exhibit that commemorates the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11. Information on the MAC’s concerts, classes, exhibits and children’s events can be found at www.ArtsinMedford.org
