UPDATE: No teacher contract settlement reached

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

A final meeting between Haddonfield Education Association representatives and the school district did not lead to a contract settlement, Board of Education President Steven Weinstein reported today.

The representatives met last night at Central Elementary School with a state mediator to see if contracts could be settled on without going into a “fact finding” stage, but a deal couldn’t be reached, Weinstein said.

Members of the HEA have been working in the district without contracts since June 2010. For almost a year the group has worked under the terms of the old, expired contract deal.

The news came this morning, but last night about 50 members of the Haddonfield Education Association marched down Kings Highway at 6:30 p.m. to demonstrate for a new contract deal. They were serenaded to the tune of cars honking from passing motorists as they walked to their final destination, Central Elementary School.

Gathering in front of the Central Elementary School entrance, the crowd chanted for fair and new contracts as just a few feet away inside the building several HEA and Haddonfield School District representatives engaged in the final mediation meeting.
