The wave of the future…for parking

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

Are parking kiosks soon going to be dotting the streets of Haddonfield? If they pass a pilot program on Tanner Street, they most likely will be.

The commissioners approved a capital bond ordinance on first reading for $520,000 of various capital improvements earlier this week. Included in the improvements is the installation of several parking kiosks along Tanner Street and its surrounding parking lots.

This will almost be a pilot program for the rest of Haddonfield, Commissioner Jeff Kasko said. The kiosks will replace the current parking meter, he said, and one will be installed every seven parking spaces along the street.

The commissioners recently met with members of the Collingswood Police Department to speak about the kiosks. Collingswood has the parking kiosks throughout its downtown district, Commissioner Ed Borden said, and had nothing but good things to say about the new items.

In several cases, Borden said towns that have installed these kiosks have seen increased revenues from their parking services. Also, the kiosks are able to accept paper money, credit cards, and debits cards, he said, making parking downtown more convenient.
