A spring symphony

The Independence Sinfonia, a 40-piece professional chamber orchestra, will bring its repertoire of fine classical music to Medford on May 1.

The concert will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 1 Hartford Road, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Symphony №7 and Mozart’s Symphony №34 under the baton of Music Director Jerome Rosen. This is the fourth year the orchestra has appeared in Medford for the benefit of the Medford Arts Center.

The Independence Sinfonia, now in its 14th season, rehearses in Wyncote, Pa., but draws its members from all over the Philadelphia area, including South Jersey. It was formed by a small group of musicians who played regularly in community orchestras, but who wanted to step up a notch professionally.

Maestro Rosen, who plays violin and keyboard, is a retired concert master of the Boston Pops, associate conductor of the Boston Symphony and former concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony.

He selected the two works to be played because they are popular and fit the length of the program. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony №34 in C major was completed in 1780 and features the festive fanfares and flourishes typical of Austrian symphonies of the time. Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Symphony №7 in A major, Opus 92 was the seventh of his nine symphonies. It premiered in Vienna at a charity concert on December 13, 1813.

Tickets for the concert are $10 and can be purchased at the door. For information, visit www.artsinmedford.org or call 609–654–6485.
