Letter to the Editor: First Things First

Dear Editor,

I have read with interest your article on improving playing fields in Moorestown. The summary in the article provides good background as to the actions taken so far. The “letters to the editor” article in the same edition from Rick Rohrback was thoughtful and certainly expressed the view of one concerned citizen of Moorestown.

As a long time resident of town and one who is old enough to have taken his “college boards” at the old Moorestown High School, I have a somewhat different view on the subject.

Why would we, the taxpayers wish to see a bond issue in the amount of $2 million plus to update and improve ball fields based on a six month study? We are into year four of trying to decide how to rebuild the town hall and police station at an estimated cost over $12 million and cannot seem to accomplish this more important project.

My view is “first things first” and rebuilding an acceptable town hall and police station is clearly the priority.

My thanks to Mr. Chiacchio and Ms. Jordan for their votes. Any project has “hidden costs” and not just the bid cost. Overruns and invalid bids can easily run up the final cost as recently evidenced by the bids to rebuild town hall. Of course, as rightly noted by Ms. Jordan, there are also on-going maintenace costs associated with any project as it is never a “once and done”.

I say “No” to the bond issue at this time.
